Why Is My TMJ Not Getting Better?

Why Is my TMJ Not Getting Better?
After seeing a dentist for TMJ/TMD pain appliance therapy some patients may not improve. Those who experience that may wonder if the appliance they received was defective in some way.

The real issue is that even dentists who treat TMJ, their previous training is not universal. For example, at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, there are two programs for training dentists:
One is an 11 month program and the other is a 2 year program which provides a Masters degree as it also includes original research projects.

The problem is that over 50% of TMD problems involve mainly issues related to the muscles which surround the jaw joint. A way has to be found that treats the muscle issues as an appliance will be less helpful in attempting to achieve a correction. Sometimes the muscle problem not only involves the jaw muscles but also the neck muscles as well. Often we have to work with a physical therapist to eliminate the neck muscle pain. Injured neck muscle can sometimes refer pain to the jaw joint so that the source of the pain and the location of the felt pain are in two different locations. An excellent diagnosis is required to make a determination as to the causality of the jaw pain.
